What is a common rail diesel system?

What is a common rail diesel system?

The fuel common rail system is a direct fuel injection system installed on diesel engines. The common rail diesel system can now ensure the maximum performance and reliability of car engines, reducing noise and emissions.

The system was invented by Mario Ricco, a Bari physicist, and consists of fuel metering unit, injection pump, guide rail, injector, sensor for detecting engine operating conditions and control unit (ECU) for managing all components.

This system completely changes the injection model of the engine, drawing inspiration from gasoline engines and deviating from traditional diesel engines.

The main difference from the latter is that the individual injectors of a common rail engine are not passive (they only open when receiving diesel under pressure) but active, as fuel injection is controlled by an electronically controlled valve. Control Unit

This mechanism allows for extremely high precision adjustment of fuel injection, which can also be carried out in multiple stages. This is conducive to a significant reduction in emission levels and the quietness of the engine.

Due to its innovation and high-performance quality, the common rail system has become a substitute for previous mechanical systems and more complex systems using pump injectors.
